The Battle Begins

Icing on brownies and sprinkles on cookies, cake with fudge topping and bright colored candy.
Double-stuffed mint Oreos straight from the store, these are a few of my favorite things.

I could go on and on, but the gist is that I have a slight obsession with sugary concoctions. I truly don't discriminate against dessert in any form. But I have come to the realization that this relationship with sugar will cause diabetes in a matter of months.

Sugar and I have been at battle before. I've had small victories and some failures. But this time I need something different to break my eating habits. Nothing extreme, nothing I can't maintain, just a form of helpful control.

I've been thinking about this problem a great deal this past week. I then remembered a story a new friend told me about a woman who wanted to stop smoking. She decided that if she smoked another cigarette she would give $2,000 to an organization she detested, the KKK. Every time she reached for a cigarette, images of lynchings and burnings came to her mind and helped her put the cigarette down. She quit. Cold turkey. Very impressive.

Well, I've decided to adapt her method. I'm not going cold turkey, but I am limiting myself to one treat a day. This could be one Tootsie Roll or a cupcake, but the goal is to begin being selective in the sugary delights I put in my mouth until August 31 (the day before my birthday).

So what happens if I eat more than one treat (definition of treat: anything considered a dessert including granola bars and full calorie soda) per day? Well, I've written out a check to Jason Chaffetz's senate campaign to be sent out on my birthday if I fail. I have no desire to get myself in political hot water with this blog. I'm a fiery independent that dislikes extremism, and Jason Chaffetz somewhat embodies this Tea Party movement that I have a hard time understanding. I also would be just sick if Jason Chaffetz won a senate seat after Bob Bennett lost his. (I have a baby crush on Bob Bennett and always will. Such a great guy.)

Anyway, so this blog (my very first blog) is to monitor my progress for my new 18 week goal starting tomorrow. Wish me luck. I'll need it.

  1. I'm with you on this Rachel. I am a firm believer in the hazards of too much sugar. After a sugar filled Easter weekend I am ready to swear off sugar completely.

  3. Good luck, Rach! I will be sure to make the caramel rolls on a day you have not already partaken of sugar. That check must not be sent :)

  6. I love that you're using the story from RadioLab for your method to combat sugar. And even more than that, how did we never get to the topic of politics on our trip? I'm right with you. Strong independent with a crush on good ol Bob too. You've just climbed yet another notch, Miss Rachel.

  7. Rach,

You never cease to amaze! And, donating to the Chaffetz campaign is scary enough to make anyone stay away from sugar!

  8. I'll be right here to cheer you on and do whatever it takes to prevent the check from being sent! One treat a day is such a manageable idea — good one.

  12. I love this Rachy. Me and my cousin did a sugar time out, and had to eat a can of dog food if we gave in. It worked quite well. Giving your money to Republicans is basically the same thing.
